Why Windows Matter: Finding the Perfect Fit

Why Windows Matter: Finding the Perfect Fit

When you look at Finmark Construction’s Portfolio, one element of our design theme that is consistent across all projects is the use of well-placed windows to provide expansive views and allow for natural lighting to flood the home. Some considerations that prospective homeowners should make while envisioning window placement and use in their future home include operability, glass type, cladding type, and location. We discuss some thoughts on each of these points below.

Operability: Window operation options include casement, single and double-sliders (vertical and horizontal), awning, and fixed. Casement windows are great for strategically catching a nice breeze, while fixed panes provide economy for access to natural light. Each window operability function deserves thought to make sure it functions according to the desired use.

Glass Types: Specialized treatments to filter UV rays come in various grades and options. For example, Andersen Windows Low-E SmartSun is a great option in Montana’s climate, where we experience winter and summer extremes demanding optimal energy performance. It is also important to know that glass placed low to the floor, near a stairwell or bathtub, is often required to have safety tempering.

Cladding Types: A desired aesthetic that complements your overall home design, along with performance and maintenance objectives, is usually the factor for determining the cladding types selected for windows. Options include fiber composite, wood, and aluminum. Our design team will make recommendations for your home.

Location: Window placement and quantity focus on meeting the Owner’s objective for aesthetic appeal, access to views, and lighting while maintaining the structural integrity of the wall in which the window is being placed. We will help you visualize this with our rendering modeling capabilities during the design process.
