Role Description: The Draftsman - CAD Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in Whitefish, MT. This role is responsible for preparing detailed architectural and engineering drawings using Blue Beam and Chief Architect CAD software to support custom home design and construction. Day-to-day tasks include translating design concepts and sketches into accurate technical plans, updating drawings based on design revisions, and coordinating with architects, engineers, and project managers to ensure plans meet structural and code requirements. The technician will maintain organized drawing files, assist with plan sets for permitting and construction, and help refine details that support high-quality craftsmanship and efficient build processes.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of residential drafting or CAD experience, preferably in custom home design or residential construction.
- Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting, Architectural Technology, Construction Technology, or a related field is preferred (or equivalent professional experience).
- Proficiency in Chief Architect for developing and modifying detailed construction documents, including floor plans, foundation plans, roof plans, framing layouts, and construction details.
- Strong working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu for PDF plan review, markups, quantity takeoffs, revision management, and collaboration with designers, engineers, and project managers.
- Ability to accurately translate conceptual designs, sketches, and field notes into complete, buildable construction documents.
- Experience revising plan sets throughout the design and construction process while maintaining organized file management and version control.
- Working knowledge of residential construction methods, structural systems, building materials, and sequencing to produce practical, construction-ready drawings.
- Familiarity with the International Residential Code (IRC), local building codes, and permitting requirements.
- Ability to coordinate architectural drawings with structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing consultants.
- Strong understanding of dimensioning standards, drafting conventions, construction detailing, and drawing organization.
- Experience creating permit sets, bid sets, and final construction document packages.
- Comfortable interpreting engineering calculations, surveys, site plans, and topographic information.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple active projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with designers, project managers, field supervisors, and trade partners.
- Highly detail-oriented with a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality documentation.
Bonus Qualifications (Growth Opportunities):
- Experience with custom luxury residential homes.
- Experience producing terrain models and site plans in Chief Architect.
- Knowledge of mountain construction, hillside foundations, retaining walls, and complex roof systems.
- Experience coordinating with survey data and engineering consultants.
- Familiarity with rendering, visualization, or presentation drawings within Chief Architect.
- Construction field experience or hands-on knowledge of residential building practices.
